What should a new student expect on the
first day of class? |
|
The beginning of the first day of class will be spent
familiarizing the new students with the studio and studio rules.
Clay will be distributed (25# of stoneware clay is included in your
class fee) and we will use the pottery wheel for the first time.
We fully expect that each new student can produce a piece of work by
the end of the first class. Not a masterpiece, but something.
Something to get past the initial hesitancy so they can feel more
comfortable during the second lesson. That's when you produce
your first Masterpiece! (OK, maybe not, but you have to start
somewhere. And like anything else, wheel throwing requires
practice. LOTS of practice.)

Here is a picture of the wheel throwing
room. Notice the wedging table in the foreground with the clay
recycling container to the right, the clean up sink, lots of shelves
for storing work in progress, and some of the wheels. Working
with clay can be dirty and messy but if everyone cleans up after
themselves, it really helps out.
